Stele - Biodegradable Urn
Image: Memoria
The Stele Collection emerged from an exploration into biodegradable funerary design objects, grounded in circular economy principles, notably the revalorization of material residues within ecological cycles. The urns are made from by-products of Québec’s stone-processing industry, combined with recycled gypsum and an organic binding agent.
Developed in collaboration with the CTTEI (Industrial Ecology Technology Transfer Centre, Sorel), this patented composite actively supports soil regeneration by stimulating microbial activity and enhancing nutrient bioavailability, thereby contributing to plant root development, rather than functioning as an inert substrate.
Formally inspired by ancient funerary stelae, the collection reinterprets their verticality through a porous, granular material language that evokes erosion, sedimentation, and the passage of time, situating the urn within a continuum of geological and cultural processes.
